The City of Charleston Financial Empowerment Center (FEC)—in partnership with Increasing H.O.P.E Financial Training Center—is looking for a Financial Counselor who’s ready to make a lasting impact.

At the FEC, we provide free, one-on-one financial counseling to help individuals improve credit, reduce debt, grow savings, access safe banking, and build long-term financial stability. As part of a national network supported by the Cities for Financial Empowerment Fund, we’re on a mission to equip our community with the tools and support they need to thrive.

Position Overview: Financial Counselor

As a Financial Counselor, you’ll serve as a trusted coach and motivator—helping clients create and follow personalized financial action plans that lead to real, measurable change.

Key Responsibilities:

·         Deliver one-on-one financial counseling sessions (initial and follow-ups)

·         Create customized action plans covering credit, debt, savings, banking, and legacy planning

·         Track client progress and provide ongoing encouragement

·         Connect clients to other support services (benefits assistance, tax prep, community resources)

·         Accurately maintain client records and comply with program protocols

·         Participate in training and continuous professional development

·         Meet and exceed performance goals that directly improve client outcomes

 

Qualifications

We welcome diverse experiences and backgrounds. Ideal candidates will have:

·         A bachelor’s degree or at least two years of relevant experience in social services, financial education, counseling, coaching, or related fields

·         Skills or background in one or more of the following: social work, financial planning, coaching/mentoring, teaching, or financial services.

·         Excellent people skills—empathetic, trustworthy, and culturally competent

·         Comfort with tech tools such as Microsoft Office and client database systems

·         Flexibility to work occasional evenings and weekends

·         Bilingual in English and Spanish is a plus

Schedule:
Monday–Thursday: 9:00 AM – 5:00 PM
Friday: 9:00 AM – 12:00 PM

FEC Program Director and Executive Director
